All about DotA
- Despite this not being stated in some tooltips, several spells deal targets a very short stun; this interrupts actions and the channeling of most spells. Examples include (but are not limited to) Shuriken Toss, Void, Lucent Beam, Lightning Bolt, Mana Void, Spirit Lance, Explusion and Sunder.
- A hero trapped by Frostbite, Overgrowth, Ensnare or Earthbind may still cast spells.
- DotA is a type of map known as an Aeon of Strife map. AoS was a custom game that originated in Starcraft, and its playstyle has since been used as the basis for many custom maps in Warcraft III.
- The Nightstalker’s ultimate, Darkness, can be used at night instead to extend the duration of nighttime.
- Eul’s Scepter of Divinity was named after the person whose legacy in DotA remains till today.
- Axe’s illusions may also deal damage via Counter Helix.
- The melee damage return on Blademail stacks fully with the Nerubian Assassin’s Spiked Carapace.
- The Earthshaker’s Earthshock used to work for all spells cast, including active item abilities. This functionality was subsequently removed for balance reasons.
- DotA stands for Defense of the Ancients.
- The Bone Fletcher’s Wind Walk is today intentionally removed the first time Searing Arrows is learnt to prevent an early method of abuse.
- The Bone Fletcher’s Searing Arrows is considered a toggled orb effect.
- Evasion does not stack; an ability that gives a higher percentage chance of Evasion will override that of another which gives a lower chance.
- If you have multiple items with active abilities of the same type, for example, Dagon or the Hand of Midas, using on of their abilities puts both into cooldown.
- Most buffs will be removed by Omniknight’s Repel, Purge or Cyclone (there are exceptions, like the Troll Warlord’s Rampage)
- Guinsoo’s Scythe of Vyse was named after the person who developed most of the 5.xx series.
- As of a recent version, the Ursa Warrior is no longer considered a ranged hero.
- Damage buffs, from abilities such as God’s Strength and Command Aura, and damage reduction, from abilities such as Terror, Enfeedble and Diffusion Aura, only affect a hero’s base damage and the damage given from primary attribute stat points.
- Sven is actually the name of an ancient ruler of Denmark sometime during the Middle Ages.
- Akasha is actually the name of the Queen of the Damned, a protagonist from Anne Rice’s novel of the same name.
- The Enchantress’ Enchant can Dominate enemy images, as can the Holy Knight’s Holy Persuasion.
- In the past, some heroes would change form when they used Avatar, of the Black King Bar. The Lone Druid would become a ranged bear, and the Tinker a tank. However, this phenomenon ceased happening as of the Avatar recode in a recent version.
- If the Butcher is Silenced with Rot activated, he will become unable to turn it off. This also applies to the Tormented Soul’s Pulse Nova, as well as the Storm Spirit’s Electric Rave.
- Only two names are given to the Goblin Techies, where in actuality three of them can be seen from the in-game model used.
- Lina Inverse was from an anime series called ‘Slayers’.
- Rikimaru was a ninja from a game called Tenchu.
- Tinker’s ultimate, Rearm, can even reset the cooldowns of the active skills on items, such as Dagon and Boots of Travel. Some items, however, are restricted; these include the Hand of Midas and the Helm of the Dominator.
- The Phantom Lancer, Azwraith, is based on a creature from the game Final Fantasy.
- Medusa was the name of the Serpent Goddess worshipped by Lybian Amazons, but was later reinvented in Greek mythology as one of the Gorgons. Her gaze would turn people to stone.
- King Leoric is based on the character of the Skeleton King, from Diablo.
- Lucifer is a fallen angel in Christian beliefs.
- Zeus is supreme ruler of Mount Olympus, and the Gods who reside there, in Greek mythology. Zeus was originally worshipped as a weather god, and he controlled thunder, lightning and rain.
- Juggernaut’s Omnislash shares its name with Cloud Strife’s Limitbreak ability, from Final Fantasy.
- Blink Strike and Nether Strike, once cast, will cause the caster to be displaced to the location of the target, no matter the distance the target moves before it happens. This can cause casting units to be moved incredibly large distances from where they were if the target were to use any movement spells beforehand.
- You can kill and deny your own teammates when they are affected by most damage-over-time skills (Curse of the Silent, Shadow Word, Shadow Strike, Doom), as well as below 25% of their maximum hitpoints.
- The Chaos Knight has the highest initial speed at 325.
- The Tidehunter’s Kraken Shell skill will remove all negative buffs on him periodically. This can remove several spells that normally cannot be, such as Doom.
- You can attack invisible targets if they are revealed by Strygwr’s Thirst, even though you might not necassarily be able to see them.
- There is yet no female hero whose primary attribute is Strength.
- Most AoE spells, such as Waveform, Shockwave and Carrion Swarm, may hit invisible units.
- Nerubian Weaver’s Shukuchi grants it maximum movement speed.
- The only heroes that have random names are the Ursa Warrior and the Nerubian Assassin.
- As N’aix levels, he only gains 1.4 Strength stat points (compared to 1.5 Intelligence and 4.05 Agility points) even though his primary attribute is Strength!
- A courier may use the abilities on items such as Dagon, Hand of Midas and Mekansm, provided they have a sufficiently large mana pool.
- Images enjoy Feedback fully from the Diffusal Blade and the Manta Style items.
- Juggernaut’s Healing Wards are movable.
- Many auras in the game stack fully, even though they give similar effects. For instance, the Rogueknight’s Toughness Aura and Devotion on the Ring of Basilius stack fully, as do the Troll Warlord’s Fervour and the attack speed aura on the Assault Cuirass.
- The AoE of Naga Siren’s Song of the Siren at level 3 is larger than a screen-length.
- The corpses of dead units will still reflect echoes from the Earthshaker’s Echo Slam if it is used near them.
- Roshan respawns every 10 minutes, stronger than he was before.
- The Spirit Bear and Infernal summons do not take bonus damage from Arcane Orb.
- Purge cannot cancel Doom, and several other triggered spells, such as Aphotic Shield, Maledict, Poison Touch and Weave.
- A Dagon 5 costs more than a Divine Rapier.
- Canceling the Prophet’s Teleport will not trigger the cooldown nor cost any mana.
- The first 2 levels of Enigma’s Conversion create Eidolons with Normal attack, whereas the later 2 levels create Eidolons with Piercing attack.
- Maim, Bash and Critical Strike will override Medusa’s Split Shot when any one of them is triggered on the same attack.
- Both the Fountain of Life and the Defile Fountain of Life are no longer invulerable, and hence can actually be destroyed.
- The movement speed of the Spirit Bear can be upgraded to 380 with level 4 Synergy.
- The maximum range of an Illuminate blast around as wide as the width of a screen.
- Using Manta Style will cancel Metamorphosis, Dragon Form or Shapeshift.
- The Red Dragon of Elder Dragon form deals full splash damage to nearby units, while the Blue Dragon only deals half.
- Dragon Form and Shapeshift give significant speed bonuses.
- Poison Nova and Poison Sting cannot kill units.
- Axe’s Culling Blade deals a very, very large amount of damage, and hence will go through any damage reducing ability (Borrowed Time, Refraction, Dispersion), short of total invulnerability.
- Unlike other similar morphing abilities, using Manta Style will not cancel Chemical Rage.
- Malefice will stop working upon the target of it turning invisible.
- Illuminate actually has a conical area of effect similar to that of Breath Fire, despite the Shockwave graphic shown.
- The Replication of a unit under the effect of Voodoo or Hex will not again take its original shape; it stays as a critter forever.
- Meepo the Geomancer has the lowest Strength growth in the game.
- You can actually destroy Runes and items by attacking them.
- The Sand King can move whilst Epicenter is in effect.
- The Oblivion has the highest Intelligence growth in the game.
- You can evade projectiles and spell projectiles of with many other spells when used at just the right time. Blink, Wind Walk, Leap and Mirror Image are just some of them.
- The Eye of Skadi’s Frost effect is not considered an orb effect on ranged heroes.
- The Dwarwen Sniper has the fastest attack projectile speed in the game.
- Cleaving Attack given by the Battlefury stacks with the Rogueknight’s Great Cleave and the Magnataur’s Mighty Swing.
- The Treant Protector has the highest Strength growth in the game.
- Maxing your stat bonuses gives you a total of 380 hitpoints, 260 mana, 20 damage, plus 20% IAS, and 2.86 armour.
- The Nightstalker’s line of sight is actually much greater during the night, and lessened in the day.
- Lifesteal is not capped. The Broodmother can attain 116% lifesteal with various items and her ultimate, and all 116% of it would work.
- Creeps spawn every 30 seconds.
- Voodoo and Hex will instantly kill images if cast on them.
- Images cannot damage Roshan; they are destroyed before even concluding an attack.
- Desolate, among other on-attack abilities of the like, has a short, split-second imposed cooldown to prevent abuse.
- The manual casting of autocast-attack abilities – such as Arcane Orb, Glaives of Wisdom and Impetus – can be used to avoid the effects of passive on-attack debuffs, such as Return, Untouchable and Corrosive Skin.
- Orb-walking is the practice of manually casting autocast-attack abilities (instead of leaving them on autocast), subsequently canceling attack animation and chasing. This method is advantageous mainly as it does not aggravate nearby creeps, such abilities being counted as spells.
- Should your hero be acquired as the target of a tower, simply initiating an attack on a friendly unit with it will cause the tower to reacquire targets, possibly causing it to lose your hero. This tactic works whether or not the attack connects, and can be life-saving.
- Despite what the tooltips state, spells that deal damage over a duration often deal instances of damage very frequently, in intervals as small as fractions-of-a-second. Examples are Avalanche, Ion Shell and Diabolic Edict. As such, these spells procure instances of damage very quickly, proving very effective against the Templar Assassin’s Refraction.
- The Empty Bottle has no cooldown. As such, you can have multiple Empty Bottles on a single hero and each would work independantly of the others.
- Though the Empty Bottle has no cooldown, spamming it is not wise because it heals at a flat rate no matter how many instances are active.
- There are many spells in the game which deal amounts of damage exactly as stated in the tooltips. Examples include Laser, Test of Faith, Brain Sap, Impetus, Glaives of Wisdom and Arcane Orb.
- The cleaved damage dealt by Cleaving Attack ignores armour.
- Return damage dealt by Blademail and the Nerubian Assassin’s Spiked Carapace is considered magic damage, and can hence be blocked completely by spell immunity.
- All forms of Cleaving Attack affect units in a circular area in front of the attacking hero.
- Aphotic Shield negates damage ‘spill’. This means that a Shield will always negate an incoming instance of damage fully as long as it is still active, no matter if it absorbed more than it should have on that instance.
- The Frostsaber’s Roar produced on the conclusion of Leap is actually an aura that radiates from the Priestess of the Moon.
- The amount of damage needed to trigger a passive Quill Spray from Bristleback has already been reduced by Bristleback itself.
- The Ursa Warrior’s Overpower has a duration which surpasses its cooldown. That means that Overpower may be used in quick succession to give several more rapid attacks.
- Certain triggered kinds of evasion stack diminishingly with the Evasion granted by The Butterfly and Radiance. This allows heroes with such abilites to attain very high Evasion percentages.
- The Stealth Assassin’s illusions do not deal Backstab damage despite the animation displayed.
- The Storm Spirit’s Overload is triggered by the next instance of damage dealt from him after his attack is initiated. This means that Overload could be triggered by damage from Radiance even before the connecting of his projectile.
- The area damage dealt by the Templar Assassin’s Psi Blades is dependant on the next instance of damage dealt from her after her attack is initiated. This means that anything from as little as 35 damage (Radiance) to amounts as large as 400 (Dagon Energy Burst) may be splashed instead of her attack damage.
- A single Ring of Basilius gives more mana regeneration than a Sobi Mask does when the possessing hero has less than 32 Intelligence. Beyond 32, a Sobi Mask is far more cost effective for the amount of regeneration it gives.
- A Shadow Wave will not heal the Shadow Priest unless he casts it on himself as the first target.
- Unlike the heal on a Mekansm, the mana restoration ability on an Arcane Ring will stack with multiple consecutive instances of usage.
- Items with no charges left will not even show up in th inventories of illusions.
- The damage returned by Blademail or the Nerubian Assassin’s Spiked Carapace excludes the bonus damage dealt by a critical.
- The effects of triggered buffs usually stack indefinitely and additively when cast consecutively on a target (either via a Refresher Orb, Rearm, -WTF mode or the single player command -refresh) unless a limit is specified. Examples of this include Aphotic Shield, Ion Shell and Mjollnir’s Static Charge.
- Refraction does not take damage below 5 as an instance. This means that certain spells, especially at lower levels, may go through Refraction and affect the Templar Assassin as if Refraction were not present. Examples include Levels 1 to 3 of Ion Shell, Level 1 Rot and Heartstopper Aura (when the TA has less than 500 maximum hitpoints).
- When cast upon any hero with an innate damage-reducing ability, Aphotic Shield gains a healing effect similar to that of it used simultaeously with Borrowed Time. The target will thus be healed for all the damage it takes.
- Repel stops all spells, even those beneficial, from being cast on affected units.
- Time Walk, Waveform and Leap, among other such movement spells, allow the movement into normally inaccessible locations on the map.
- Once on the Shadow Path created by her Dagger, the Spectre loses all collision. In this state, she can move on any kind of terrain. By default, the Warcraft engine causes her to walk around normally unpathable terrain when issued movement orders, but a player can actually repeatedly click near her to force her to ‘pass’ through the terrain.
- Repel can be cast on enemies.
- Units killed under the effect of Soul Assumption leave no corpses.
- Purging Grave Chill off the target of the spell will not remove the speed buff the Necro’lic gets. Doing vice versa will also not remove the slow the target is afflicted with.
- There are several abilities which are not in the least affected by Purge. Maledict, Rupture, Doom, Shallow Grave, Shadow Word, Poison Touch and Weave are some of them, among others.
- The Bounty Hunter gains gold from Track for denying allied heroes.
- Attacking an allied unit will also deal Psi Blades damage to all nearby enemies, as per the norm.
- The Dwarvern Sniper’s Headshot has the functionality of triggering on allied units.
- The Juggernaut can Teleport while using Bladefury.
- Several of the frost-based spells in the game, such as Frost Armour, Frost Nova, Dual Breath, Chain Frost and Freezing Field all slow units by a common amount.
- You can activate Psionic Traps almost immediately after they are planted.
- Rot can be activated during Dismember.
- Maledict no longer deals 40 damage per 100 hitpoints cursed target has lost; now, it deals 40% of what the target has lost.
- Penitence does not stack with Decrepify, because Decrepified units are immune to the physical damage Penitence deals.
- The Undying’s Plague can go on forever as long as it has the targets to spread it.
- Using Lifedrain on a Decrepifed unit will deal more damage, as well as drain more hitpoints.
- Only the Gorgon’s Purge may target units immune to magic.
- Fatal Bonds stacks with successive casts.
- Gravekeeper’s Cloak does not disperse instances of damage over 1400.
- Tangoes do not stack.
- Maledict can be countered via a heal, such as Mekansm.
- Hand of God heals all of the Geomancer’s clones.
- Haunt creates an illusion for each of the Geomancer’s clones.
- Thundergod’s Wrath only affects the original Geomancer.
- Moving into certain spots, such as the body of water behind the Fountain of Life, with Lightning Grapple is disabled to prevent abuse.
- All of the Faceless Void’s units may move freely in his Chronosphere. These include images, dominated creeps and couriers.
- Dismember, Shackles and Fiend’s Grip cannot be simultaeneously cast upon a single target.
- Rampage, Ultimate and Frenzy override MoM’s Berserk and vice versa.
- A ranged Troll Warlord can still benefit from the 15% Bash chance given by a melee Basher if it was picked up while he was in melee form, as can the Lone Druid, Dragon Knight and Soul Keeper.
- Rupture will not do any damage if the target of it moves too significant an amount of distance. This allows for escapes with Teleport.
- The Venomancer’s Poison Nova will have absolutely no effect on units damaged by Shukuchi, if both spells are cast within 4 seconds (the duration of Shukuchi) of each other.
- Impetus damage is capped at 400 to prevent instant kills on Teleporting units.
- Poison Nova can actually kill units with incredible luck; 1-2 physical damage is dealt to all targets on the casting of the spell.
- Neutral creeps spawn every 2 minutes.
- Devoured units will be released on the death of the Doombringer, if they are still within him.
- The damage dealt by a Wind Walk or Vendetta backstab is physical and cannot be Evaded, unless by means of a triggered ability.
- The Centaur Warchief can now be killed by use of Double Edge; he could not before. Double Edge damage is also now reduced by magic resistance.
- Sunder does not actually do damage; all it does is manipulate the numbers of target’s hitpoints. As such, it cannot be evaded or reduced by spells such as Refraction and Bristleback, respectively.
- The durations of most negative buffs will be paused on units affected by spells like Astral Imprisonment and Chronosphere, and resumed when the aforementioned spells end.
- The Spiritbreaker’s Nether Strike will always allow him to hit his target, even if he is killed in the casting process.
- Wild Axes cannot hit invisible units.
- Chain Frost, among other abilities, may target units out of vision if they are close enough.
- The area of effect of the Shadowfiend’s Shadowrazes is pretty large, despite the graphic. A unit can actually be hit by two different Razes if standing directly in between.
- Fatal Bonds will not spread any damage over 6000. If a unit is killed under its effect, the maximum amount of damage that can be done will not exceed the unit’s hitpoints.
- Devour can actually miss its target, if the target is moving away quickly enough.
- Doom stops many non-triggeed passive spells from working, such as Critical Strike and Evasion.
- Rhasta’s Mass Serpent Wards do full splash damage in a small area around them.
- Rise of Winterchill is a Hosted Project here on DotAPortal. Developed by Softmints, it is an alternative map to DotA in the same genre, featuring new heroes, items, layout, and gameplay. Be sure to download and try it!

Red Alert 3 Full Introduction Video
Red Alert 3 is set in a parallel universe in which World War II never happened and instead the Soviet Union rose to power, battling the Allies in the 1950s. In this game, the Empire of the Rising Sun rises to power as a threat as well. All three factions are playable, with the main gameplay involving constructing a base, gathering resources, and training armies comprised of land, sea, and airborne units to defeat other players. Each faction has a fully co-operative campaign, playable with an Artificial Intelligence or with another human player online. These campaigns follow a storyline, with specific mission objectives and unit restrictions applied. Unrestricted skirmish play against the computer and multiplayer via LAN or online is also available.
Here is the full introduction video.
